حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنِ الأَرْقَمِ بْنِ شُرَحْبِيلَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ لَمَّا مَرِضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ مَرَضَهُ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ كَانَ فِي بَيْتِ عَائِشَةَ . فَقَالَ " ادْعُوا لِي عَلِيًّا " . قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ نَدْعُو لَكَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ قَالَ " ادْعُوهُ " . قَالَتْ حَفْصَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ نَدْعُو لَكَ عُمَرَ قَالَ " ادْعُوهُ " . قَالَتْ أُمُّ الْفَضْلِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ نَدْعُو لَكَ الْعَبَّاسَ قَالَ " نَعَمْ " . فَلَمَّا اجْتَمَعُوا رَفَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ رَأْسَهُ فَنَظَرَ فَسَكَتَ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ قُومُوا عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ . ثُمَّ جَاءَ بِلاَلٌ يُؤْذِنُهُ بِالصَّلاَةِ فَقَالَ " مُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ " . فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ رَجُلٌ رَقِيقٌ حَصِرٌ وَمَتَى لاَ يَرَاكَ يَبْكِي وَالنَّاسُ يَبْكُونَ فَلَوْ أَمَرْتَ عُمَرَ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ . فَخَرَجَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ فَوَجَدَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ خِفَّةً فَخَرَجَ يُهَادَى بَيْنَ رَجُلَيْنِ وَرِجْلاَهُ تَخُطَّانِ فِي الأَرْضِ فَلَمَّا رَآهُ النَّاسُ سَبَّحُوا بِأَبِي بَكْرٍ فَذَهَبَ لِيَسْتَأْخِرَ فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ أَىْ مَكَانَكَ فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ فَجَلَسَ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَقَامَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَأْتَمُّ بِالنَّبِيِّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ وَالنَّاسُ يَأْتَمُّونَ بِأَبِي بَكْرٍ . قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ فَأَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ مِنْ حَيْثُ كَانَ بَلَغَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ . قَالَ وَكِيعٌ وَكَذَا السُّنَّةُ . قَالَ فَمَاتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ فِي مَرَضِهِ ذَلِكَ .
It wasnarrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said: “When the Messenger of Allah(PBUH)fell ill with what would be his final illness, he was in thehouse of‘Aishah. He said: ‘Call ‘Ali for me.’ ‘Aishah said: ‘OMessenger of Allah, should we call Abu Bakr for you?’ He said:‘Callhim.’ Hafsah said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, should we call‘Umar foryou?’ He said: ‘Call him.’ Ummul-Fadl said: ‘OMessenger of Allah,should we call Al-‘Abbas for you?’ He said:‘Yes.’ When they hadgathered, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH)lifted his head, looked andfell silent. ‘Umar said: ‘Get up andleave the Messenger of Allah(PBUH).’ Then Bilal came to tell himthat the time for prayer had come,and he said: ‘Tell Abu Bakr tolead the people in prayer.’ ‘Aishahsaid: ‘O Messenger ofAllah, Abu Bakr is a soft and tender-heartedman, and if he does notsee you, he will weep and the people will weepwith him. If you tell‘Umar to lead the people in prayer (that wouldbe better).’ AbuBakr went out and led the people in prayer, then theMessenger ofAllah (PBUH) felt a little better, so he came out,supported by twomen, with his feet making lines along the ground.When the people sawhim, they said: ‘Subhan-Allah,’ to alert Abu Bakr.He wanted tostep back, but the Prophet (PBUH) gestured him to staywhere he was.Then the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) came and sat on hisright. Abu Bakrstood up and he was following the lead of the Prophet(PBUH), and thepeople were following the lead of Abu Bakr. حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ حَمْزَةَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ تَخَلَّفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ فَانْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى الْقَوْمِ وَقَدْ صَلَّى بِهِمْ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ رَكْعَةً فَلَمَّا أَحَسَّ بِالنَّبِيِّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ذَهَبَ يَتَأَخَّرُ فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ أَنْ يُتِمَّ الصَّلاَةَ قَالَ " وَقَدْ أَحْسَنْتَ كَذَلِكَ فَافْعَلْ " .
Hamzahbin Mughirah bin Shu’bah narrated that his father said: “TheMessenger of Allah (PBUH) lagged behind (on a journey) and we reachedthe people when ‘Abdur Rahman bin ‘Awf had already led them inoneRak’ah of the prayer. When he realized that the Prophet (PBUH)wasthere, he wanted to step back, but the Prophet (PBUH) gestured tohimthat he should complete the prayer. حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتِ اشْتَكَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ نَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ يَعُودُونَهُ فَصَلَّى النَّبِيُّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ جَالِسًا فَصَلَّوْا بِصَلاَتِهِ قِيَامًا فَأَشَارَ إِلَيْهِمْ أَنِ اجْلِسُوا فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ " إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ الإِمَامُ لِيُؤْتَمَّ بِهِ فَإِذَا رَكَعَ فَارْكَعُوا وَإِذَا رَفَعَ فَارْفَعُوا وَإِذَا صَلَّى جَالِسًا فَصَلُّوا جُلُوسًا " .
It wasnarrated that ‘Aishah said: “The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) fellill and some of his Companions came to visit him. The Messenger ofAllah (PBUH) performed prayer while sitting down, and they prayedbehind him standing up. He gestured them to sit down, and when hefinished he said: ‘The Imam is appointed to be followed. حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ صُرِعَ عَنْ فَرَسٍ فَجُحِشَ شِقُّهُ الأَيْمَنُ فَدَخَلْنَا نَعُودُهُ وَحَضَرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ فَصَلَّى بِنَا قَاعِدًا وَصَلَّيْنَا وَرَاءَهُ قُعُودًا فَلَمَّا قَضَى الصَّلاَةَ قَالَ " إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ الإِمَامُ لِيُؤْتَمَّ بِهِ فَإِذَا كَبَّرَ فَكَبِّرُوا وَإِذَا رَكَعَ فَارْكَعُوا وَإِذَا قَالَ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ فَقُولُوا رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ وَإِذَا سَجَدَ فَاسْجُدُوا وَإِذَا صَلَّى قَاعِدًا فَصَلُّوا قُعُودًا أَجْمَعِينَ " .
It wasnarrated from Anas bin Malik that the Prophet (PBUH) fell fromhishorse and he suffered some lacerations on his right side. We wenttovisit him and the time for prayer came. He led us in prayer sittingdown, and we prayed behind him sitting down. When he finished theprayer he said: “The Imam is appointed to be followed. When he saysAllahu Akbar, then say Allahu Akbar; when he bows, then bow; when hesays Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah, then say Rabbana wa lakal-hamd;whenhe prostrates then prostrate; and if he prays sitting down thenpraysitting down.” Translation Not Available

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رُمْحٍ الْمِصْرِيُّ، أَنْبَأَنَا اللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ اشْتَكَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ فَصَلَّيْنَا وَرَاءَهُ وَهُوَ قَاعِدٌ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ يُكَبِّرُ يُسْمِعُ النَّاسَ تَكْبِيرَهُ فَالْتَفَتَ إِلَيْنَا فَرَآنَا قِيَامًا فَأَشَارَ إِلَيْنَا فَقَعَدْنَا فَصَلَّيْنَا بِصَلاَتِهِ قُعُودًا فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ قَالَ " إِنْ كِدْتُمْ أَنْ تَفْعَلُوا فِعْلَ فَارِسَ وَالرُّومِ يَقُومُونَ عَلَى مُلُوكِهِمْ وَهُمْ قُعُودٌ فَلاَ تَفْعَلُوا ائْتَمُّوا بِأَئِمَّتِكُمْ إِنْ صَلَّى قَائِمًا فَصَلُّوا قِيَامًا وَإِنْ صَلَّى قَاعِدًا فَصَلُّوا قُعُودًا " .
It wasnarrated that Jabir said: “The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) fellill,and we prayed behind him while he was sitting down, and Abu Bakrwassaying the Takbir so that the people could hear them. He turned tousand saw us standing, so he gestured to us to sit down. When he hadsaid the Salam, he said: ‘You were about to do the action of thePersians and Romans, who remain standing while their kings areseated.Do not do that.
